ALEX LYNN | Songwriter | Performer | Teacher |
My lessons are enjoyable and engaging, even though I take teaching very seriously. I teach all my students as individuals, using over 20 years' experience to tailor an approach that works best for each one.

Here are some of the things I can teach:
  • Guitar, bass or ukulele playing.
  • Blues, rock, country, jazz, funk, classical, etc.
  • Songwriting skills.
  • How to sing and play at the same time.
  • Performance skills.
  • Improvising and soloing.
  • Theory (including ABRSM grades).

My Teaching

I teach in the Centre for Young Musicians, a branch of The Guildhall, where we have highly talented youngsters and a leading guitar department, led by the great Tim Pells. It is a vibrant and innovative teaching environment, like no other. I am the guitar tutor on their Primary Years Programme, where I teach a group of children from age six and I jointly lead an ensemble.

I also teach in the London Borough of Camden, and I’ve taught in several other London music services, and schools, both state and private, I teach whole classes, small groups, individuals and I lead guitar ensembles. I run a composition group for primary school children, which has had some very successful performances. I’ve taught students of all abilities, including many with learning difficulties. I always aim to find a way to help each student get the most out of their learning.

My Qualifications
I have a first class degree in music and a postgraduate certificate in perfromance teaching from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Grade Exams
If you want to take an exam, I will help you achieve the highest possible grade. No student of mine has ever failed a grade, and almost all receive a merit or a distinction. I have taught all the main syllabuses (ABRSM, Trinity, RGT, Rock School, Trinity Rock and Pop), so I’ll help you find the one that’s right for you.

Learning to Teach Yourself
Especially for adult learners, I aim to teach you how to learn and achieve your musical potential. Many of my adult students have had occasional lessons, just to boost up their skills, or maybe prepare for that gig. I’ve taught singer songwriters a few fingerstyle chops as they prepare to record an album. I always teach with the intention of helping students to become independent learners over time. The regularity of the lessons is up to you. I'll always be able to give you enough material to work on between lessons.
