A Series of Lessons in The Blues

The pandemic has been a difficult time for people who make their living from music. I’ve been luckier than many, as I’ve been able to transfer a lot of my teaching online. It’s been one hell of a learning curve. A year ago the only videos I’d ever made involved me using a webcam and sitting in front of a black sheet hung on the wall. I’ve now made over 100 teaching videos. This series here was made over a number of months and you can see how I got better with the technology – as I got hairier and hairier and then shaved everything off. If you follow these videos in sequence, you can get from playing a basic power chord to a full 12-bar blues riff. If you try them and you get stuck, feel free to drop me a line via the contact page.

How to Play Power Chords
The simplest type of chords and the basis for much rock and pop music.

Power Chord Backing Track
Something to play along with once you've mastered the basic power chords

Learning the Blues – Part One: The Riff
Using the power chords, simple palm-muting and a basic rhythm workout to learn the basic blues riff.

Learning the Blues – Part Two: Changing Chords
Now you can play the riff in one place, learn how to jump across the strings without losing the beat.

Learning the Blues – Part Three: The Structure
Learn how to change chords at the right time to play a basic 12-bar blues.

Learning the Blues – Part Four: Backing Track
Play along with the 12-bar blues with the chords written on the screen to help you.
